哥伦比亚大学（Columbia University）于1754年初创，是北美洲乃至全世界最杰出的大学之一。1954年1月4日恰逢该校二百周年校庆，美国邮政为此发行雕刻版纪念邮票一套一枚，面值3美分。邮票的主图是该校最重要的建筑之一——罗氏纪念图书馆（Low Memorial Library），下方有英文字样“Man's right to knowledge and the free use thereof”（人类获取和自由使用知识的权利）。这也是时任纽约州州长、哥伦比亚大学法学院校友杜威（Thomas Dewey）在校庆典礼上所作演说的主题。插句题外话：杜威曾经和杜鲁门就美国总统一职展开角逐，结果失败了。而“先总统 蒋公”在内战战场节节败退的情况下，雪上加霜地在1948年美国大选中押错了宝，过早表明对杜威的支持，结果惹毛了杜鲁门，后续的事情就不用说了。
虽然发行很早，但由于发行量很大，这枚邮票本身并不值钱，在国际市场上也就半美元不到，在外邮收集、鉴赏者寥寥的中国内地更是卖不上价。
这枚首日封是从一个美国卖家处收来的，看起来似乎和一般市面上常见的普通白封有点区别，可能是官方发行（Official Souvenir Cover）。
里面还夹了一封信，落款是该校第十四任校长格雷森·柯克（Grayson Kirk）。不过签名估计是批量印上的。

As you may have noted on the envelope, the Post Office Department has issued a Columbia Bicentennial Commemorative Stamp in tribute to one of the nation's oldest institutions of higher education.
你们可能已经注意到信封上的东西了。邮政部发行了一枚本校二百周年校庆纪念邮票，向我国最古老的高等教育机构之一致敬。
The University takes pleasure in sending you a "first day cover" - the envelope in which this message has been dispatched - as a memento of this occasion. To stamp collectors it may have additional value.
校方很高兴能够寄给你们一件“首日封”，也就是借以寄出本份信件的信封，来纪念这个伟大的时刻。对于集邮者而言，这个信封或许会更富有价值。
In every respect 1954 will be a momentous year for Columbia. We look forward to the pleasant opportunities the coming year will provide for uniting with our many friends and alumni in the observance of our 200th anniversary and in the advancement of the Bicentennial Theme - "Man's Right to Knowledge and the Free Use Thereof".
